The "Co-op Economy" political ideology centers on the belief that economic activity should be organized primarily through cooperatives—businesses and organizations that are owned and democratically controlled by their members, whether they are workers, consumers, or producers. This ideology emphasizes collective ownership, shared decision-making, and the equitable distribution of profits and resources. Rather than prioritizing profit maximization for external shareholders, the co-op model seeks to align economic activity with the needs and interests of those directly involved in or affected by the enterprise.

The roots of the co-op economy can be traced back to the early 19th century, particularly in response to the social and economic upheavals brought about by the Industrial Revolution. Workers and communities, facing exploitation and insecurity under emerging capitalist systems, began forming cooperative societies as a means of mutual aid and self-help. One of the earliest and most influential examples was the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, founded in England in 1844, which established principles that have guided cooperative enterprises ever since.

Over time, the co-op economy ideology has been influenced by various strands of socialist, anarchist, and social democratic thought, all of which critique the concentration of economic power and advocate for more democratic forms of ownership. The cooperative movement spread globally, adapting to local contexts and needs, and has played significant roles in sectors such as agriculture, retail, banking, and housing. In many places, cooperatives have been seen as a practical alternative to both state socialism and corporate capitalism, offering a "third way" that combines economic efficiency with social justice.

Throughout its history, the co-op economy has faced challenges, including competition from larger capitalist enterprises, difficulties in accessing capital, and sometimes internal governance issues. Nevertheless, the ideology persists and has experienced renewed interest in recent decades, especially in the context of economic crises, growing inequality, and the search for more sustainable and democratic economic models. Today, the co-op economy is promoted by international organizations such as the International Co-operative Alliance, and its principles continue to inspire movements for economic democracy and community empowerment around the world.
